If you think it’s still too early to start thinking about what to give your friends and family as a present this Christmas, then you’re awfully wrong. Like a festive Ned Stark, we’re telling you: Christmas IS coming – and there’s really no time to hesitate: only in a matter of days elegant Andrássy avenue will be lit up with decorative lights to spread the holiday message and raise your Christmas spirit! Should you be looking for something special this year, we know where to go: MOMkult has various concerts for you to choose from. MOM Cultural Centre is the perfect place to return for a good concert or to discover it if you haven’t done yet so.
MOM Cultural Centre – close to the famous shopping mall and sports centre with great public transport and a nice view on the Buda mountains – looks back to an interestic history. The socialist realist cultural centre was constructed by the plans of Károly Dávid on request of the Hungarian Optical Works (MOM) in 1951 with elements borrowed from the Bauhaus style, resulting in an impressive, modern building. Its aim was to supply employees of MOM and local habitants with quality artistic and cultural events. For a long time MOM housed Buda’s most modern theatre hall: the Hungarian Television had broadcasted a number of live streams from here.
In 2011, for the 60th anniversary of the cultural centre, the building was refurbished completely, meanwhile its surroundings have gone under extensive changes as well: there’s now a broad promenade adjoining the building, which was expanded with a cosy café and an open terrace. There’s also been an event space established next to MOM, as well as a huge conference centre and an elegant restaurant. Thanks to all of these things, during the years MOM Cultural Centre had become one of the important players in the cultural life of Budapest, a real meeting point of the community. Its programme is characterized by a diversity in genres and quality content: every age group can find something to their liking from classical and pop music concerts to dance shows, theatre plays and movie screenings.
MOMkult’s concert calendar has music to offer for everyone: on 4-5 December you can listen to Kiscsillag, a rock band lead by András Lovasy, singer of the former cult band Pál utcai fiúk. Should you be a fan of classical music and looking for something special, don’t miss „A pentagramma nyomában” on 10 December. Specialty of the concert is that Anima Musicae Chamber Music Orchestra is conducted by the world class violin player Kristóf Baráti. If you are looking for something lighter, you can choose among several concerts: on 11 December Laura Cserpes introduces her new album, while Bálint Gájer and friens will evoke the spirit of Frank Sinatra on 12 December with their concert Sinatra 100. On 13 December Dénes Pál will give us a taste of his talent with a Christmas concert, while audiences can welcome Eurovision semi-finalist Boggie at MOM on 18 December. On 27 and 29 December French singer Anne Carrere transports us back into the era of “La vie en rose” with her performance of Piaf! The Show. Warming you up to a memorable New Year’s Eve will be Hot Jazz Band on 30 December, while you can say goodbye to the Old Year set to the live music concert of Budapest Bar, accompanied by the sound of clinking champagne glasses on 31 December.
