Expat Retreats to Foreign Lands to Salvage Career

Phuket_Viewpoint

Thailand is a wonderful country, which now sees thousands of expats settle in the country each year. It often appears on industry lists as one of the most desirable places for expats to live in the world because of its affordable living and warm climate.

There’s also a sizeable amount of retired expats who venture to cities like Phucket and Bangkok to live out their last years on the planet because they enjoy the relaxed way of living in these cities. But for some, moving to Thailand means something completely different, altogether.

For Jordan Westmorland, moving to Phucket was one of the many possible relocation destinations that the Seattle-born was contemplating when Black Friday took away his living in his homeland. You see, back in 2011, Black Friday shut down all the online casino portals that were operating in the United States, and for professional online players like Westmorland, this took away their livelihood.

Not being able to earn money online was a disconcerting situation for the Seattle-native to be in. Reading news online, he soon saw a trend of online players relocating to Mexico, Europe and other parts of the world – one in which was Thailand. After flirting with the professional circuit, playing actual physical tournaments, Westmorland realized that his future remained in online poker, thus made arrangements to look into relocating.

Westmorland is good at what he does. To date he has over $3 million in declared online winnings, so giving this lucrative day job up wasn’t an option. Upon his arrival in Thailand, he stayed in the country for a number of years with the freedom of playing online without the restrictions that were imposed by his home nation’s ban on online gambling.

After getting a taste for traveling, Westmorland soon realized that he should see the world as much as possible and began playing tour poker again – although, this wasn’t his long-term plan. After a couple of years in Thailand he decided to move to Australia to further broaden his horizons. In an interview with Bluff Magazine, he said that he’s actually contemplating staying in Australia now because he loves it so much.

“Australia’s great. The people are amazing; the weather’s really nice. The only reason why I’d probably move away is that it’s probably the most expensive place I’ve ever spent time in. Rent is ridiculous there, and with me potentially travelling so much to play live poker we might find a new base somewhere in 2015,” he told Bluff Magazine in mid-2014.

There’s no strict rulings in place that prohibit online gaming in Australia, hence why Westmorland feels at home in the Southern Hemisphere. Like Europe, Australia has never imposed sanctions on gaming apart from strict safety measures on websites to ensure gamblers are protected, which has been in place since casino portals first emerged when the pioneering InterCasino became the first portal on the Internet.

With no restrictions on his play and the sun on his back, Westmorland or JWProdigy as he’s known online, doesn’t look like he’s going to return home anytime soon. He’s enjoying his life more than ever, and Black Friday has affected many people who call poker a profession. So much so, that there’s a huge community now that help expats relocate to other countries and aid them in settling in foreign lands.
