It was a memorable event when our city took over the flag from Tbilisi last summer, as Győr is the host city of the next summer European Youth Olympic Festival.
The Coordination Commission visited our city around the end of last year, and they evaluated the preparations positively. Patrick Hickey, President of the European Olympic Committees also spoke in high terms about Győr, the city that is preparing for the EYOF 2017. Recently Katerina Nycova, EYOF coordinator had meetings with the members of the Organising Committee and the representatives of the sports federations, where they discussed the actual questions of the organisation. As she told us, three days long she was having continuous negotiations with the heads of the different departments, they summarised the work already done and discussed the most important tasks of the next period. „The previous three days were very fruitful, and my opinion about the current stand of organisation is very positive. The experts do their present tasks in a well-prepared way, and I am sure that Győr is going to be an excellent host of EYOF 2017.” Mr. Péter Bolla, mayor’s commissioner added that of course there will be regular meetings like this in the future, and this year the Coordination Commission and the technical delegates will also visit Győr. Besides this, at the end of the year our city will present the actual stand of organisation in front of the whole General Assembly of the European Olympic Committees.
Mr. Zsolt Borkai, mayor of the city of Győr explained that the regular reports are very important, because these occasions also offer the members of the Organising Committee a good control-opportunity, during these meetings they can discuss the progress of the preparations and determine the fields on that they have to lay a bigger emphasis. The coordinator could give us useful information to these questions. We are proceeding well with the preparations, but of course we still have many tasks to solve, because Győr would like to be an excellent host of the event. This is also a key question in regard to winning the rights to organise the 2024 Olympic Games. If our ‘letter of reference’ from 2017 is good, than it can favourably influence the decision on the summer Olympic Games.
While Győr is preparing for the EYOF, it also pays attention to the 2024 Olympic Games. On Friday, at the General Assembly the members of the City Council accepted the declaration that puts down the commitment of Győr in connection to the organisation of the Olympic Games. The foot-stone of the bid of Budapest is that following the spirit of the Olympic reform package called Agenda 2020, it wishes to organise the Olympic Games in the whole country, so in the case of a winning bid venues outside Budapest will also join in the organisation. Győr would also be one of the host cities; according to the proposal our city would host the preliminary rounds of football and handball. The ‘letter of guarantee’ accepted by the General Assembly is one of the premises of the Hungarian bid. The declaration written to Mr. Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee guarantees the respectation of the Olympic Charta and ensures that Győr is going to do its best in order to fulfil all requirements prescribed for the host cities. So the declaration of Győr is a further small step towards the 2024 Olympic Games in Hungary.
