Hungary will operate temporary consular services in three French cities where the Hungarian national football team will play in the 2016 UEFA European Championship during the summer, the foreign minister said after talks with Sándor Csányi, president of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ). The consular services will be offered from June 5 in the offices of Hungary’s honorary consul in Bordeaux and Marseille, and in the Hungarian House in Lyon, Péter Szijjártó said.
“Our responsibility is to take necessary steps to provide for the safety and rights of Hungarian citizens” attending the events in large numbers, he said. There are honorary Hungarian consuls in Bordeaux and Marseille, so in these two cities the temporary office will operate from their existing premises, while in Lyon officials from the Ministry will be available to fans at the Hungarian House, the Minister said, adding that if the Hungarian team successfully qualify, which he hopes will be the case, then a full mobile consular service will be available to provide assistance at other locations during the knockout phase of the tournament in Toulouse, Nice, Lens and Paris.
Sándor Csányi, president of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), said at the press conference that their security staff and Hungarian police officers will also be on duty during the matches. Hungarian fans travelling to France are asked to register with the Hungarian consular service, which they can do online via the Foreign Ministry’s website. Hungary’s national eleven defeated Norway in a playoff in November last year to make its way to the European Championship for the first time since 1972. The national team will play with Austria on June 14 in Bordeaux, Iceland on June 18 in Marseille and Portugal on June 22 in Lyon, in Group F. via hungarytoday.hu
