At first, blind dates seems to be surreal or tricky. The biggest obstacle being that they may be theoretically blind, but before we even go, we’ve created scenarios in our mind. This may include how they may look or act , how they may react to how we look or act, how things may go, and our end result and exit strategy. In fact, the very high failure rate of these blind dates may be directly related to these completely counterproductive preconceptions…
But not with us. This article is more of a fairy tale about two of our expat clients who met each other accidentaly in our office. We immediately understood their right pick so decided to organize a blind date without involving them. The surprise was a trip abroad, outside the walls of our beloved Budapest. We turned the globe and Verona, Italy came out. So the show and its preparation began…
Usually an 8 hour drive can sound weird knowing the fact that you’re completely closed with someone you saw only once and have no idea how to escape from awkward situations or uncomfortable conversations. Nowhere to hide, but how to behave?
According to their preparations (had no clue about the type of the trip neither had information about when and where they might go) a few things they had in mind and shared with us:
- Set The Expectations To Neutral
- Dress To Impress
- Arrive Early
- Keep The Conversation Flowing
- Don’t Get Too Personal
These six bullet points sounded funny subsequently but may be useful for those still looking for the perfect match.
Our story went well on road, we lost contact with them right at the time they set in the car and started to chat immediately. We got set everything -Stogram’s way- from hotel booking to restaurant reservations and even selected the best bars to try the best Proseccos in town. This time our hotel pick was Hotel Giulietta e Romeo, a nice and comfy hotel in city center.
The restaurant we chose was Pescheria Masenini where one can have the best fish plates ever eaten. Located on the piazza where Verona’s Roman fish market once held sway, softly lit Masenini quietly serves up Verona’s most imaginative, modern fish dishes. Inspired flavour combinations might see fresh sea bass carpaccio paired with zesty green apple and pink pepper, black-ink gnocchi schmoozing with lobster ragù , or sliced amberjack delightfully matched with crumbed almonds, honey, spinach and raspberries.
According to our plan the evening was followed by the usual bar hopping with Prosecco tasting.
They started at La Bottega del Vino, where wine is the primary consideration at this historic enoteca (wine bar) with backlit bottles above the bar, and you’ll find your sommelier will gladly recommend a worthy vintage of some of the best wines here are bottled specifically for the Bottega.
Then they followed to Osteria del Bugiardo. Following the success of the Osterias in Verona (we’re also huge fans) a small table was reserved for them to have a drink in this friendly atmosphere. The “Osterias” have become cool gathering points for city dwellers, business people and tourists who want to enjoy a glass of wine and taste typical dishes of Verona. Our selection was the one in the historic centre of the city.
We asked some pictures from them of Verona but only those on a highly professional level so we got no info on their envolving relationship until the second day:
On the picture everything seemed to be hearts and flowers to us, so it was a huge relief to get to know that it really was the beginning of something beautiful. Don’t want to go deep intimate and telling secrets or even shouting out statements too early but this couple seemed worth all of our organisational knowledge and energy to let the magic happen in the foggy city of Verona.
When back, we had great time with them sharing their toughts on blind dates, expat life and also on living in Budapest or abroad. Surely they will go back to Verona and curiously interested to hear about new stories on our trips and activities.
