13 problems you’ll be familiar with if you’re an expat

Life abroad is wonderful… most of the time  article By Elizabeth Roberts for telegraph.co.uk

You know there will be challenges, like learning a new language, but other problems might catch you by surprise

Some expats spend their days posting selfies of themselves sunbathing and tweeting about their amazing lifestyle. But others are a little more honest about the negative sides of life overseas … here are the top 13 moans

1 – It might take you a little while to adjust to living in a different time zone. More than a little while in fact.

ThatIan Lawson @tilawson: moment when you wake up at 2am because its 10am where you used live. #expatproblems.

Emily Melcher @europedin:The good news: you do get used to time differences. The bad news: it apparently takes over five years. #expatproblems
5 – Your friends at home will judge you for stuff that is just a normal part of life where you live – like having hired help around the house.
Rebecca @Bonkano: “You’re such a spoiled expat!” “That’s not what my housekeeper says!” #expatproblems
6 – If only those friends understood how tough life can be. First, there is the nightmare of dating in a place where half the people you meet plan on leaving pretty soon.
Miss Paipai @la_cpaillard: Maybe I’m too fussy, but leaving the country in 2 weeks….pretty big turn off. #expatproblems
7 – And when people visit from home, they are almost guaranteed to bring some kind of lurgy that you’ve lost all immunity to.
Chantelle Howell @seychellesmama: Caught a virus that my friend bought back from the UK with her…I can think of better things she could have brought me. #expatproblems
9 – Meanwhile simply getting through the day can be a challenge when everything is back to front and upside down.
Max Thornton @RainicornMax: been using a US keyboard for almost a week; how much longer until I stop mixing up ” and @ (and can find # on the first try)? #expatproblems
Gore Gore Girl @GoreGoreGal: Been living in the U.S. for ten years and I still try to get into the passenger side of my car. #expatproblems
10 – Just communicating with those around you can be an uphill struggle.
Hannah De Graves @HDeGraves: Yes. Yes. Totally. Mmmmhmmmm. Have no idea what you are saying. Yes. Serious face. Still no idea. Just going to keep nodding #expatproblems
Em @karflooie: I can’t sing Disney songs with my Swiss friends. They only know the German words and I end up singing alone. Loudly. #expatproblems
Alison Elizabeth @alisone_k: Trying to use a voice activated service as an English girl in America is extremely challenging! #expatproblems #expatlife
11 – You’ll soon find your visa has run out. And you will waste hours of your life queuing to renew it.
G.Bax @florencediaries: I forgot how much fun sitting in an immigration office all day is! Oh wait…#questura #expatproblems #permesso
12 – Taking a holiday may not turn out to be the relaxing experience you’d hoped for.
Rachael Green @RachaelGreen: Abu Dhabi airport. It’s like hell, but with less interesting people. I think I will avoid this route next time.#expatproblems #longhaul
Carey @That_Musician: In the voice of Joan: NO MORE AIRPLANES. #done #flights #expat #expatproblems
13 – And the good news is that just as soon as you’ve cracked the local lingo, you’ll realise you’ve forgotten your own.
Laura Davies @Laurad_jane: When ‘danke’ falls out of your mouth more naturally than ‘thank you’ even though you’re in the UK…and British  #expatproblems
